Local activities in Rethymno, Crete

Who is around in these confusing times where people’s voices are only heard in market places, a sign of help cannot be held out with only a stretch of the hand, burnt deep into our hearts our moral dilemmas tilt, as the ever growing intensity increases and the anticipation centres towards the upcoming elections?

“Our Comrade Elias Vamiadakis from Sydney visited the Holy Monastery of Arkadi in Rethymno, spoke with the faithful who were in the Monastery and with Father Evmenios who sent his blessings to the Chief of Our Movement, General Secretary Nikolaos Michaloliakos and to those who resisted the sale of our Motherland!” (English translation from the original Hellenic article)

The Arkadi monastery was a key factor in the Cretan insurgency from 15,000 invasive Turks during the 1866 revolution otherwise known as “The Holocaust of Arkadi”. The monastery housed 259 armed men and almost 700 unarmed women and children who sought refuge and after 3 days of desperate and relentless battle, Konstantinos Giaboudakis, the hegumenos of the monastery, led more than 600 women and children to the monastery’s gunpowder storage room and ignited one of the gunpowder kegs choosing to sacrifice themselves as free Hellenes rather than surrender to the Ottoman cowards.
