The Athens mosque deal was made in 1979 by New Democracy! and was later revealed in 2003 by Sueddeusche Zeitung.

Why do Muslims in Athens resort to courtyards, basements and garages to pray? This question was answered by the correspondent of the newspaper Sueddeusche Zeitung (30.9.2003) in Athens, Christiane Schlescher, through a trip to an illegal mosque in the Hellenic capital.

Mrs Schlescher wrote , In Athens alone, "more than 120,000 Muslims live today,". They have created about 29 mosques themselves. One of them is located near Omonia. By 2004 the Hellenic government intends to formally build a mosque, a decision that has caused a storm of reactions, mainly from the Orthodox Church. " But the issue has other aspects, she wrote: The mosque will be financed by Saudi King Fahd, a deal that was closed in 1979 by the then Hellenic Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis.
